The organisers of Ibadan Fan Expo (IFE) have announced that the convention will not take place in 2026.
In a statement shared with The African Comics and Cinematic Empire (TheACE), the organising committee cited logistical challenges and the need to secure a future date that does not conflict with similar events as the primary reasons behind the decision.
“After careful consideration, we regret to announce that Ibadan Fan Expo will not hold this year,” the statement read.
According to the organisers, the move is part of a broader effort to create a more balanced pop culture events calendar for fans and creatives in Ibadan and beyond.
“This decision was made due to logistical challenges and our commitment to secure an alternative date on the annual calendar that does not conflict with similar events. We believe the people of Ibadan deserve a diverse calendar of pop culture conventions to look forward to throughout the year.”
The announcement comes less than a year after the maiden edition of Ibadan Fan Expo was launched by Lagos Comic Con founder Ayodele Elegba as part of a growing network of fan-focused events across Nigeria.

Held in July 2025 at the International Conference Centre, Ibadan, the debut edition brought together comic creators, animators, gamers, cosplayers, exhibitors and fans for a day of panels, competitions, networking opportunities and entertainment. The event also sparked conversations around the future of Nigeria’s comic book industry, including discussions on creative labour, freelancing, studio culture and sustainability within the sector.
Prior to its launch, the convention attracted attention for its ₦250,000 prize pool across cosplay and art competitions, as well as its ambition to establish a dedicated pop culture gathering for Ibadan’s growing geek and creative community.
While the cancellation means the city will not host the event this year, the organisers have assured fans that the decision does not signal the end of the convention. In the meantime, the team is says its attention is firmly fixed on delivering a successful edition of Lagos Comic Con, scheduled for September.
“We warmly invite all our Ibadan fans and community to join us in Lagos to celebrate with us this year,” the organisers stated.
The committee also thanked supporters for their understanding and continued backing, adding that further information regarding the return of Ibadan Fan Expo will be communicated in due course.
The cancellation leaves a temporary gap in Ibadan’s pop culture events calendar but signals the organisers’ intention to reposition the convention for a stronger return in the future.
