Comic Con Ibadan Introduces Guild of Publishers Ahead of 2026 Convention

As preparations gather pace for the 2026 edition of Comic Con Ibadan, the organisers have announced the launch of the Comic Con Ibadan Guild of Publishers, a new initiative designed to give Nigerian comic publishers a formal role in nominating works for the convention’s annual awards. The move comes as part of a series of early announcements for the upcoming convention, including additional award judges, new partnerships and an open call for exhibitors.

The newly introduced Guild of Publishers is revealed as a structured collective within the Nigerian comic ecosystem rather than a traditional industry association. According to organisers, the initiative is intended to create a clearer and more equitable pathway for award nominations by allowing publishers and creators to put forward the works they believe best represent their catalogue.

Membership in the Guild will be open to publishers and creators with at least one verifiable published comic project. Each publishing studio will be able to appoint up to two representatives whose responsibility will be to nominate eligible titles from their respective studio for consideration at the annual Comic Con Ibadan Awards.

The organisers say the idea emerged from the rapid growth of comic publishing activity in Nigeria. As more independent studios and creators release new titles each year, identifying standout works for awards consideration has become increasingly complex. By introducing a publisher-led nomination system, the Guild is expected to help the convention better understand the breadth of projects emerging across the ecosystem while maintaining fairness in the awards process.

Beyond nominations, the Guild is also expected to function as a consultative body whose feedback may influence how the convention itself evolves. Organisers note that the collective will remain a reputable but relatively closed arm of the convention, with insights from its members helping shape decisions not only around awards but also aspects of programming and the broader experience for creators and publishers attending the event.

The introduction of the Guild builds on the growing reputation of the Comic Con Ibadan Awards, which many within the local comic community regard as one of the most credible recognition platforms in the Nigerian comic book space. A major factor behind that perception is the calibre of its judging panel.

Among the judges is Murewa Ayodele, the Nigerian writer currently scripting Storm for Marvel Comics. The panel also features respected author Ray Anyansi, alongside industry professionals including Sewedo Nupowaku and newly added judge Funmilayo Martin-Luther, also known as Blaise. The organisers say assembling a judging panel with strong professional credentials has been central to maintaining the awards’ focus on merit and industry standards.

In addition to expanding the judging panel, the awards programme itself is also evolving. New categories have been introduced to reflect the widening scope of the creative ecosystem surrounding comics. These include Comic Convention or Industry Event of the Year, Fan of the Year and Game Studio of the Year, acknowledging the increasingly interconnected relationship between comics, gaming and broader fan culture.

The Guild announcement is only one part of the early rollout for the 2026 convention. Organisers have also issued a call for exhibitors, inviting comic creators, publishing studios, retailers and creative brands to secure space at the event. Early partnership announcements and additional programming updates have also begun appearing as the convention builds momentum toward its next edition.

Although the official theme for the 2026 edition has yet to be unveiled, the early announcements suggest that the organisers are continuing to position Comic Con Ibadan as more than a fan gathering. Since its inception, the event has steadily evolved into a platform that connects creators, publishers, gamers and enthusiasts while contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s wider geek and pop-culture ecosystem.

The convention’s organisers point to several milestones that reflect this ambition. In 2024, the event collaborated with the acclaimed graphic novel O Kingdom Come to organise one of the continent’s largest comic competitions, awarding approximately ₦2.4 million in cash prizes. In 2025, the convention also partnered with Nexal Gaming to host a major campus gaming tournament, expanding its reach beyond the traditional comic audience.

As anticipation builds for the next edition of Comic Con Ibadan, the introduction of the Guild of Publishers signals a deeper commitment to strengthening the structures that support Nigeria’s comic book industry. While the theme for the 2026 convention is yet to be unveiled, the early announcements suggest that organisers are focused not only on delivering another fan-centred celebration of geek culture, but also on reinforcing the convention’s role as a platform for recognising, documenting and advancing the country’s growing comics and pop-culture ecosystem.
