Nigerian Animators Get New Funding Opportunity as Creative Fund Opens Applications

Nigerian animators and creative studios now have a new opportunity to secure funding for production, technical development, and skills transfer projects following the opening of applications for the Creative Fund 2026.

Backed by the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub and funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the initiative supports projects across the film, fashion, and music sectors. Within the film category, eligible activities include animation, visual effects, post-production, editing, sound design, colour grading, and other technical disciplines that contribute to the creative value chain.

According to the programme guidelines, applicants may seek support for projects focused on production, technical training, software acquisition, equipment procurement, mentorship, and collaborative knowledge-sharing initiatives. The fund is structured around three funding tracks: Core Project Grants, Growth Project Grants, and Collaborative Grants, each designed to address different stages of organisational and industry development.

The funding opportunity arrives at a significant moment for Nigeria’s animation industry, which has continued to attract international attention through original productions, digital content, and festival participation. Despite this progress, access to funding and technical infrastructure remains one of the sector’s most persistent challenges.

Research commissioned by the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub found that Nigeria’s creative economy contributes an estimated $3 billion annually to the country’s gross domestic product and employs more than four million people. However, the study also revealed that fewer than 10% of creative practitioners have access to formal financing, while a substantial amount of specialised technical work continues to be outsourced outside the country due to gaps in local capacity.

For animation professionals, these findings reflect challenges that have long shaped the industry’s growth. Many studios and independent creators continue to face difficulties accessing advanced production tools, specialised training, and investment required to scale projects beyond the development stage. The result is often increased production costs and fewer opportunities for local talent to gain experience in high-value technical roles.

The Creative Fund aims to address some of these barriers by supporting projects that strengthen technical expertise, build sustainable creative businesses, and encourage knowledge transfer across the industry. Successful applicants will be expected not to deliver their proposed projects and contribute to broader ecosystem development through mentorship, training, or community-focused initiatives.

Eligibility requirements stipulate that applicants must be registered creative entities operating within the supported sectors. Projects must also involve between two and five mid-career creative professionals with at least two years of relevant industry experience, reflecting the programme’s emphasis on professional development and sector-wide impact.

For Nigeria’s animation community, the initiative is another opportunity to strengthen local production capabilities at a time when demand for African stories and intellectual property continues to grow. Increased access to funding, technical resources, and industry collaboration could help accelerate the creation of locally developed content while expanding employment opportunities for the next generation of creative professionals.

Applications for the Creative Fund 2026 are currently open and will be reviewed on a rolling basis ahead of the final submission deadline of 30 July 2026.
