Abir Gasmi is a Tunisian writer and screenwriter whose career reflects the International Women’s Day 2026 theme by championing creativity, cultural dialogue, and women’s leadership in storytelling. Originally trained as an engineer, she returned to her first passion—writing—in 2011, becoming a screenwriter for film and comics. Her debut graphic novel, Oblation, earned recognition at the Algiers International Comics Festival, marking the beginning of an award-winning journey. Gasmi has since authored several graphic novels and collaborates with NGOs to create educational comics while mentoring emerging artists through workshops. As a key member and coordinator of the LAB619 collective, she has organized artist residencies exploring borders, migration, and identity. Her collaborations with illustrator Kamal Zakour have received major international awards, including the Mahmoud Kahil and CairoComix prizes. Currently in residence at the Maison des Auteurs, she is developing an Arabic science-fiction trilogy expanding new creative horizons.
