Fifi Mukuna

Fifi Mukuna is a Congolese cartoonist, caricaturist, and illustrator whose career powerfully reflects the International Women’s Day 2026 theme by amplifying women’s voices, resilience, and freedom of expression through art. Born in Kinshasa and trained at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, she rose to prominence in the 1990s through satirical illustrations published in leading Congolese newspapers, using humor and caricature to challenge political systems and social injustices. Forced into exile in France in 2002 after threats linked to her outspoken work, Mukuna transformed personal displacement into creative resistance, producing comics that confront stereotypes, migration realities, and post-colonial identity. Her graphic novel Kisi le Collier and contributions to collective anthologies explore themes including child welfare, cultural identity, and women’s rights. As an educator and workshop facilitator with cultural and humanitarian organizations, she mentors emerging artists while advocating for storytelling as a tool for social change. Through bold visual narratives, Mukuna demonstrates how women artists shape dialogue, preserve memory, and inspire empowerment across borders.
